How to Check a Website 500 Error

A 500 error may be caused by a PHP problem. Temporarily enable PHP error display to see the actual error.

Steps

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin or cPanel.
  2. Open Select PHP Version → Options.
  3. Find and tick display_errors.
  4. Reload the affected website page.
  5. Record the displayed error, file path, and line number.
  6. Untick display_errors after checking.

Important

Do not leave display_errors enabled. Error messages may expose sensitive website information.

If no error appears, check the website’s error_log file or contact your website developer.
